Last weekend Andrew and I went back to the Midwest for a wedding. We’re from Iowa and have flown in and out of Minneapolis on several occasions, but have never tried to eat vegan in the city. Prior to our trip I spent amble time researching the list of options available. Here were my top choices:
We were there for a day and a half (including the wedding) so we were able to cross four off our list. As soon as we arrived we got our rental car, went to drop our stuff of at our friend’s apartment and went straight to J. Selby’s. I had high expectations for this one and it did not disappoint. We started off ordering the Dirty Secret (two Herbivorous Butcher beaf patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheeze, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun) and The Solo (Herbivorous Butcher beaf patty California Style (lettuce, tomato, and onion) with cheeze). We took a seat at the bar so we could watch the kitchen and chatted with the staff about their food and Portland.
Our burgers were delicious and our fries were perfectly crispy, but while we ate I continued to watch order’s come out and knew I was going to have to get more before we left. Luckily, they made an extra batch of their wings (battered cauliflower “wings” with celery sticks, ranch dressing, and your choice of sauce: Naked, Buffalo, BBQ, or sweet chili Asian) and split them between the three groups sitting at the Bar. These were the best cauliflower wings I have ever had. The batter was perfectly crispy, the cauliflower was in bite size pieces, and the buffalo sauce was spot on.
Before we left I did go back and order a pretzel (with mustard and cheeze sauce) and a Brownie Soyclone. It was noted that the ice cream used was not their normal ice cream. The ice cream that they had been using lost it’s kosher certification so for the time being they substituted coconut ice cream. It definitely had a coconut flavor, but it was still delicious and their homemade brownies are to die for.
I would definitely recommend J. Selby’s to anyone (plant based or not) visiting the Twin Cities. The staff were some of the most friendly I’ve experienced, everything that we tried was beyond our expectations, and there are several different options to go back for again!
